The Best of Both Worlds? March 31, 2022by Martin 6 When the Insta360 One R launched in 2020, it was a camera we'd never seen before. The clever modular design meant it could be used as a 360-degree camera or as an action camera by clicking on another lens module. Now, a few years later, Insta360 is looking to improve its formula by introducing the One RS. This new camera improves on its predecessor in many ways, but it also manages to maintain module compatibility with the previous generation. So if you want to upgrade the battery but use the old One R lens modules, that's no problem. Back compatibility is a rare feature in the action camera industry, so we're happy to see it here.
What's new? New processor, improved stability, faster Wi-Fi C Level Executive List transfer, additional microphone Redesigned mounting bracket: Quick release, built-in microphone cover 1,445 mAh battery capacity with 1 hour charging New 4K Boost lens module Much has been updated compared to the first generation. In fact, the only part that has remained completely unchanged is the 360-degree lens module included in the set of twins. However, the 360 lens still works fantastically well and could use some improvements found elsewhere. The star of the show is the new 4K Boost lens module, which features a large 1/2-inch sensor and a 16mm (equivalent) f/2.4 lens.
The new lens module takes photos up to 48 megapixels and creates more detailed 4K videos than the last generation. In addition, it adds a new Active HDR video mode and 6K widescreen shooting for ultra-definition videos. The new Core One RS has a more powerful processor on board that boosts the in-camera stabilization capabilities. It also adds an extra microphone for better audio. The One RS's battery is very similar to its predecessor, but manages to squeeze in 21 percent more capacity, which should alleviate most battery concerns when out and about. As we mentioned earlier, Insta360 has provided backwards compatibility with the One R modules, so if a One R user wants to purchase only the new 4K Boost lens module, it will work with the One R Core and battery. In this case, you lose things like improved camera stabilization, but you can still take 48MP photos and use Active HDR.
